Abstrak

This article sheds light on the history of teaching the Indonesian/ Malay language in Japan.
The method applied was library research in which collecting the information about the
topic discussed from the relevant references was as the data collecting method. The demand
to learn the Indonesian/Malay language increased when there was a great change in
Japanese political history, the new era called by Meiji Restoration as the political
revolution. The effect of the change opened the opportunity to have contact with other
people. Additionally, there was an increase of the need to learn the Indonesian/ Malay
language due to the cultivation of the land to plant oil palm in Johor, Malaysia. Moreover,
the Japanese government supported this development by opening some school of languages
and opening the subject of Indonesian/Malay, the publication of Indonesian/Malay
publication of textbooks as references, and Indonesian/Malay languages.
