The types of attitude and translation solutions in the English-Indonesian translation of BBC News' Morocco Earthquake: Sisters's Nightmares and a Plea for Lipstick

This study analyzes the types of attitudes and the translation solutions used in translating the attitude expressions in the English–Indonesian translation of BBC News’ Morocco earthquake: Sisters' nightmares and a plea for lipstick. This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach to discuss and analyze the translation techniques in attitude appraisal. The researcher employed the attitude appraisal theory of Martin and White (2005) to identify the attitude appraisal expressions and translation solution by Pym (2018) to ascertain the translation techniques. There were 22 data found. The most common attitude expression was judgment, with nine data (40.9%). The second most frequently occurring data was appreciation, which appeared in eight data (36.4%). The least frequent data was affected, which appeared in five data (22.7%). The translation solution mostly appeared was copying structure with 15 data (68.2%). In this solution, the data was translated literally from SL to TL. The next translation solution was perspective change, which appeared in three data (13.6%) in which the translator changed the sentence focus. The next translation solution was copying words with three data (13.6%) where the items were transferred from one language to another that have similar sound. The last translation solution was density change with one datum (4.5%) where the translator changed the general term or expression into the specific ones in the target language.
