Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the differences in ceremonies when
someone enter the adulthood. There are two types of ceremonies, seijin shiki
and metatah (tooth-filing ceremony) in Bali, Indonesia. In this study, the
authors use a qualitative approach through descriptive analysis method,
which compares references from one source with references to other
sources using data from cultural journals, Balinese art books, and Japanese
culture websites. This study shows that there are similarities and differences
between seijin shiki and metatah. The most visible differences are in the
procedures for implementation, age requirements, and the clothes when
someone participating in each ceremony. Although there are very
contrasting differences, the two maturity ceremonies have in common the
existence of philosophical meanings related to leaving childhood and
entering adulthood as one of the stages of life.
