Abstract

This study investigates the use of appraisal theory, particularly attitude, in translation
using corpus linguistics methods. Data consists of translation units which contain the
appraisal system, particularly attitude, and were obtained from James Clear’s Atomic
Habits as source text (ST) and its Indonesian translation by Alex Tri Kantjono Widodo as
target text (TT). The research data is in the form of text tokens with a total of 1,703 in TSu
and 1,625 text tokens in TSa. This paper seeks to identify the types of attitudes in both texts,
the frequency of each type of attitude, and attitude changes that occurred during
translation. This research used the study case method. As the main research tool, AntConc
software version 3.5.9 was used to process the corpus, particularly to identify the types of
attitudes and the frequency of each attitude in both ST and TT. The findings show that both
ST and TT contained all three types of attitudes, with appreciation as the most common
type of attitude found as much as 53 data in ST and 54 data in TT, and affect as the type of
attitude with the least frequency of occurrence, which is only found in 2 ST data and 2 TT
data. Attitude changes were also found in a number of ST and TT pairs which had different
types of attitudes.
