Abstract

The use of correct spelling in writing is a must, especially in scientific work. Spelling errors in thesis writing are often found so that the intent or information conveyed is difficult to interpret. This study aims to determine the use of spelling in student thesis. By knowing this, learning can be focused on teaching materials that are not in accordance with the target if there are parts that are not understood. Thus, students do not experience the repetition of the same mistakes. The research method is qualitative descriptive by describing the level of errors and adherence to spelling, which includes the writing of letters, the use of words, and the use of punctuation. Thesis data came from the Japanese Department of STBA LIA with the same number of samples, one from the Translation major and one from Culture. The theoretical basis as the basis for the analysis uses the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling, 2015. The results showed that many students majoring in Japanese STBA LIA were still unable to use letters, write words, and use punctuation in their thesis. In addition to these mistakes, there are a number of spelling uses that are in accordance with these guidelines. In conclusion, the use of spelling by students majoring in Japanese STBA LIA is inconsistent, in one part the spelling is written incorrectly, but in another part the spelling is used correctly.
